The Wrap-Up

Unfortunately, today was our last day in Crisfield, Maryland. We started out the day by finishing up as much drywall as we could. The entire first floor is covered with drywall except the kitchen area, with one room mudded. The drywall on the second floor is almost complete as well.   For lunch we went to the bay once again. Ryan and Jessi had a wonderful swim in the bay. After lunch we headed back to the house to clean up and pack away our tools.

It took us most of the afternoon to pack away and account for the tools. After returning from the church, a couple of us went to the dollar store to grab some treats for the trip home. After that we went down to get showers. Once we were done with the showers we packed the vans with food and drinks for dinner at the shanty. Brightbill grilled up burgers, hot dogs, and chicken. We relaxed and enjoyed our last night on this amazing trip.

Construction, Cruising, and Crabpots

The trip is almost coming to an end. Everyone in the Building Construction Cares group made wonderful progress within this week. The home owners have been greatly pleased for what we are doing for them. We managed to add more dry wall, and now on to taping. Tomorrow, we’re planning on finishing as much as we can.

After a wonderful day of working, we ended it off with a lovely Chesapeake Bay cruise. It was nice to settle down and appreciate what Crisfield has to offer. During the cruise, the boat owner was able to lift up a crab trap from the water. There was so many crabs in the trap we couldn’t believe it. Towards the end of the boat ride, the owner explained some history about Crisfield.

For example, we spotted an island which used to be a fish processing plant. Boaters would travel all the way to that island and drop off their catch of the day. Then, the workers would process the fish and ship them out. We enjoyed learning all this information about Crisfield. Another favorite part of our cruise was seeing the most beautiful sunset ever. All of us had smiles on our faces as we snapped a bunch of pictures of it. The boat ride was about two and a half hours as it came to an end around eight. We were all so thankful to be able to experience that moment. It was the perfect way to end our night. Everyone is so thrilled to go back to work tomorrow!

Beaches and Sunsets

Transferring materials to the second floor

First floor ceiling - Barowski as crew chief
Crisfield's beach
Today we woke up to eggs and bacon. Right after breakfast we went to the job site and hung drywall all morning. For lunch we went to the beach to enjoy the view and eat. After lunch we went to the Janes Island State Park and observed the wildlife. Soon after, we went back to the job site for several more hours.  We finished hanging all upstairs ceilings, most downstairs ceilings, and the walls of one room on each floor.  After work, we came back to the church and ate dinner. After dinner we went to a church worker’s shanty and watched the sunset.  Soon after, we saw a rocket take off from Virginia and shoot out of sight. In the evening we played games and worked on homework.

Production and McProducts

Today was a very productive day. We started the day with Mr. Brightbills famous egg McBrightbills®. It was a good way to start the working day. When we left the church we got right to work on the house. The insulating crews got to work on finishing insulation and the drywall crews started working hard right away. The drywall crews finished up the 2nd floor ceiling together. Most of the insulation got done today. Some students got to experience working on drywall for the first time on the 1st floor ceilings and wall. After a few hours of hard work, we took a break to enjoy lunch. After a quick break, we got back to work again. We hung up drywall and screwed it in to the ceiling. This was a task that both upstairs and downstairs were racing against the clock to compete. It was not a set goal to finish the drywall upstairs, but we wanted to get as far as we could in the little given time. Mr. Carroll went out and got us all McFlurries of our choice. We don't think anyone has ever ordered 16 McFlurries at once in Crisfield, MD.  We all gathered around to eat them together. Today was about an eight hour work day.  Everyone was working very hard and we got a lot done during the work day.

First Days in Crisfield

Jenn Becker and Brittany Leininger

10/4/15

When we arrived at Crisfield, Maryland we started to arrange the room. We set up where we were going to sleep. Later we had dinner which was wraps, hotdogs and potato\macaroni salad. Then after dinner we played ice breakers games. The games we played were killer wink, and psychiatrist.

10/5/15

Today we woke up at about 6:00 AM. We got ready to work. Then we ate pancakes for breakfast, and there was an option of getting bacon. We left at about 7:55 to go find out our task for the week. We got our task and went to one of the job sites. When we got there we had to figure out what we needed and figured out what each one of us were going to do. We got the materials we needed then we were off to work! The girls (most of them) did fire caulking and fire foaming. Then after that we did insulation, while most of the boys were upstairs putting drywall up. Then the owners of the home stopped by to see how things were coming along. Not long after that, our work day was done. About 5 minutes later a couple of us went to go get showers, then the rest of the group went. Then we came back, relaxed a little, then ate dinner (which was spaghetti). After dinner we had more relax time to do homework or whatever. Kylie and Kyle were making brownies while we are writing this. Later we will be playing games.   Tomorrow, the girls will be installing drywall on the ceiling of the first floor.
